Wondering what a day in the life of an online elementary school student looks like in Oklahoma? At Virtual Preparatory Academy of Oklahoma, the school day starts with an Advisory Hour that brings students and teachers together before any academic content begins, and ends with elective enrichment and a daily assignment review. Between those two bookends is a full schedule of live reading, math, and science or social studies instruction led by certified teachers. Here is what that day looks like for a fifth grade student.

Starting the Morning Routine

Every school day at Virtual Preparatory Academy of Oklahoma begins with Advisory Hour at 8:00 AM, a live session where students join their teacher and classmates for updates, announcements, and relationship-building activities before the first academic lesson. This daily opening ritual gives younger students a consistent, social starting point that makes the transition from home life to school life feel natural.

Before Advisory Hour begins, students and Learning Coaches log into Canvas to check the day's schedule and confirm that everything is ready for the morning.

Attending Live Online Classes

Live, certified-teacher-led classes in reading, math, and science or social studies anchor the middle of every school day at VPA Oklahoma. All live sessions are recorded, so students who need to review a lesson or who miss a session can watch it back the same day.

Morning Lessons

Following Advisory Hour, students move into a live reading and vocabulary lesson, then a guided math class with interactive practice. An independent work block with Learning Coach support and a lunch break follow before the afternoon live sessions begin. Schedules vary by grade level and subject, with each grade's plan built to meet Oklahoma state instructional requirements.

Interactive Activities

Guided math with interactive practice and a live science or social studies class give students multiple opportunities for active engagement with their teacher and the day's content. The afternoon breakout session then provides small-group time for students who need more targeted support on a specific skill.

Independent Learning Time

A midday independent work block with Learning Coach support gives students time to complete assignments and practice activities before the afternoon live session. Physical workbooks are provided to students in kindergarten through third grade to support offline learning alongside digital coursework. Schedules vary by grade level and subject, with independent responsibility growing as students move through the elementary grades.

Breaks, Play, and Physical Activity

A lunch break is built into the midday schedule at VPA Oklahoma. Learning Coaches can use this window for outdoor play or physical activity between the morning and afternoon blocks. The Advisory Hour's relationship-building activities also give younger students a social and movement-adjacent start to the day before formal instruction begins.

Teacher Support and Check-Ins

The afternoon breakout session gives students a scheduled, small-group opportunity for direct teacher help each day. All live sessions are recorded, giving students an additional way to revisit content on their own. Families can find the school calendar and communication tools on the Virtual Preparatory Academy of Oklahoma parent and student resources page.

Social Opportunities and Clubs

Students at VPA Oklahoma connect with classmates through the daily Advisory Hour, live class sessions, afternoon breakout groups, and elective enrichment in creativity or technology. The Advisory Hour is a particularly consistent social touchpoint for younger elementary students, happening at the same time every morning before any academic pressure begins.
